About The Work
The prints that comprise this series, titled Contemporánea are the artists’ first encounter with the woodcut technique.
Adding etching and monotype to the wooden matrix generates a distinctive character or overtone to the final result, with a clear-cut and crisp notion of "less is more”.
Contemporánea is comprised of a group of 9 individual pieces made in the Benveniste Contemporary workshop between 2023 and 2024. Elespe changes his register in this 5th production with Benveniste - a collaboration that began in 2016 - focusing this time on what woodcut may offer the artist's language.
By carving and scratching birch blocks he combines these supports, inked with the finest amount of ink, which allows the grain and mechanical cut of the wood to show and adds extremely meticulous and delicate etching patterns.
The images oscillate freely between suggested figurations and abstractions with a certain dreamlike evocation, whilst managing to take great advantage of the materials and processes.
